In Loving Memory of Our Beloved Late Bishop Thurman L. Hargrove, Sr.

We are grateful unto the Lord, for He saw fit to send us a father, a brother, a friend, a counselor, an entrepreneur, a builder, a planner, and an administrator. But most importantly, He sent us a true and devoted man of God—one who faithfully preached the Word to lead souls out of sin and who lived as a shining example of spirit-filled, sanctified living.

Bishop Thurman L. Hargrove, Sr. served with unwavering dedication, wisdom, and love. His legacy of faith, service, and compassion continues to inspire all who were blessed to know him.

THE LATE BISHOP DR. THURMAN L. HARGROVE

Bishop Thurman L. Hargrove, Sr. was a devoted servant of God whose ministry touched countless lives across Virginia and beyond. His journey in ministry began in 1966, when he was ordained under the mentorship of the late Honorable Bishop Robert Purnell at Refuge Temple in Richmond, Virginia. That same year, he launched a mission in Alberta, Virginia—a humble beginning that marked the start of a lifelong commitment to spreading the Gospel.

In 1971, Bishop Hargrove founded Refuge Church in Alberta, Virginia, establishing a spiritual home rooted in faith, love, and community. His leadership and dedication were soon recognized throughout the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc. In 1976, he was appointed as a District Elder in the Virginia Southern Diocese under the late Honorable Bishop Floyd Hill, Sr. Later, in 1988, he was elevated to the sacred office of Bishop and appointed to oversee the Virginia Western Diocese.

Bishop Hargrove faithfully served as Pastor and Founder of Refuge Temple in Warfield, Virginia, and Refuge Temple in Roanoke, Virginia. He also pastored Waterway Temple in Bassett, Virginia. Under his visionary leadership, the Diocese grew from two churches and a mission into a thriving fellowship of sixteen churches spanning more than 300 square miles—from Rocky Mount to Richmond, Virginia.

Bishop Hargrove was more than a leader—he was a father, mentor, and friend to many. His ministry reflected his deep love for God and his unwavering commitment to building strong communities of faith. His legacy of holiness, service, and compassion continues to inspire generations to come.

The Diocese now continues under the leadership of Bishop Dr. Maurice Carter, who was consecrated as Diocesan Bishop in July 2018. Under Bishop Carter’s guidance, the vision and legacy of the Late Bishop Thurman L. Hargrove, Sr. continue to flourish.

Mother Birddie Hargrove is an extraordinary woman whose life reflects faith, perseverance, and love. She moved to Alberta, Virginia, with her husband in 1968, embarking on a journey that would touch countless lives.

Shortly after moving to Alberta, Mother Hargrove began working at Dixon Dress Company. When the factory closed, leaving her without employment, she did not let this setback define her. With encouragement from Pastor Hargrove, she returned to school, earned her GED, and went on to enroll at Saint Paul's College—studying alongside her eldest son.

Balancing the demands of being a full-time student and a

devoted mother was challenging, and she faced serious illness during her studies. Yet through the unwavering support of her family and the miraculous healing grace of God, she persevered. Not only did Mother Hargrove graduate, but she did so Cum Laude, an accomplishment none of her children have yet achieved—a testament to her determination, resilience, and dedication.

Mother Hargrove’s influence extends far beyond her academic success. She is known for her radiant smile, her tactful approach to any situation, and her ability to teach God’s Word—not only through her voice but through her actions. She diligently follows the will of God and supports the vision established by her husband, Bishop Hargrove, while nurturing her family and the church with unwavering love.
